Cards and Letters Coming In...

I go by and visit my parents daily now.  I need to touch base and check in on them to help my sanity.  I think it might be a touchstone for my mother as well.  She knows that if she needs a break from being a full-time, live-in nurse - a 24-hour-a-day job done with love - that she can have a few minutes break and go out to the mailbox, or return some phone calls, uninterrupted, or any number of simple tasks.

Some days I think my visits are a touchstone for Daddy and he is glad to see me and then there are the days when he tells me I'm too bossy! (because I continually chastise him for removing the oxygen tubing or tell him to leave it alone to help his breathing)

One of the things which seem to make Daddy's days are the greeting cards that folks are sending.  They get cards from their neighbors' church friends.  They get cards from folks in the community.  They get cards from family members who live near and far.

Each afternoon Mom will bring in the mail and hand Daddy the cards and advertisements.  He sorts through them and slices open each envelope and reads each card.  Sometimes he recognizes the names of the sender and sometimes, of course, he doesn't even know the sender because it is sent by somebody he's never met.

Mom has been ultra-grateful for the warm thoughts each card brings and the joy it brings to Daddy every afternoon.  Just like the old wine-cooler commercial icons used to say, "Thank you for your support!"

The Pounding

My niece, Megan, got married last month.
She got married right in the middle of that snowstorm we had.

The wedding was far, far south of here - near the Alabama line and still they had issues because of the snowstorm.
They wound up having to change the venue the day before the ceremony because the road to the church was un-navigate-able.
They wound up having to prepare their own corn boil for the wedding reception because the caterer couldn't get there.

They started the ceremony a little late so that some of the guests could slip and slide to the wedding.
My parents, Mike and I weren't able to get there.

So, at the last minute, they picked up the phone and FaceTimed with my parents.
They adapted.
They made it work.
They are married as married can be.
Wrapped with smiles and love that only newlyweds can wear.
They shared the joy of receiving things to make their home feel the presence of family.
They began building memories that will follow them forever.
They opened the gifts which were assembled with love and happy thoughts.
They learned a little more about their family members and one another.
Their pantry will be fuller.
Their bellies will be warmed and filled with the love shared by family.
Their home will be blessed.
Their home will have decorations and touches which surround them with the hugs of relatives.
We planned a simple affair.
Our children, Mike, and I recently hosted an old-fashioned pounding to celebrate their new life together.
We served simple fare.
Bryan grilled up some Boston butts to make delicious Bar-B-Que and stirred up some of his special white sauce to top it.
Bridgette and Jessica baked up cute little brownie bites.
Jessica stirred up some slaw.
I picked up corn-light-bread and chips.
I stirred up some baked beans.
We invited aunts and uncles in our extended family to join us for the celebration.
We chatted and laughed and enjoyed the fellowship
.
We jotted down some advice on marriage for the newlyweds.
Some advice was philosophical and some was short, quick, and to the point!
Some advice was straightforward and some was wreathed with emotion but all was heartfelt!
Some advice took lots of thought and reflection.
Some was more everyday and humorous.
All of it was offered with love and practicality.
The folks brought gifts that were practical, utilitarian, and sensible as well as a few which were extraordinary and unique.
Wishes were wrapped and included with merriment.
Blessings abound and happiness multiplied while we supped and interacted with joy for the newlyweds.
From eldest to youngest, we al surrounded them.
A good time was had by all.
And we sent them off with a bounty, warm hearts, and sweet memories.
May they have a long and happy life together!

Other folks getting a dose of the blues...

It seems the blues are rather popular!

Kim over at Savvy Southern Style has cooled down with blue and white.

Marian at Miss Mustard Seed recently had a feature on blue and white, too.
And oh, how I would love to have some pieces of transfer-ware with the scene on the featured cup and saucer!

Years ago when I was still a teenager, I stumbled across a bowl and pitcher for a wash stand that had this scene on it.  It was priced WAY out of my budget at $50.  So, I didn't get it.  Every time I see something with this pattern, I think of that beautiful bowl and pitcher and wish I could stumble across it again...and for that price!

Simple Things

Isn't it really the simple things that turn out to be the best?

This weekend, Mike and I had the opportunity to be home alone, together, without a particular agenda.

Oh, he ran a couple of errands and made a bacon and sausage delivery.  I zipped over to a fabric store in hopes of finding the perfect companion for my Granny's quilt.

Those were not a part of a formal agenda.  We could have stayed home and told the world where we were and if necessary, it could come to us.

We watched a little television.  We napped.  We ate delicious take-out and home-cooked foods.  We talked.  We just relaxed and enjoyed one another's company or spent time alone while the other was doing.

Truly, it was simple and wonderful!

It was rejuvenating.

I hope you have a simple week...or can handle the bluster of your life simply.

Lillie and Blaze

I love a little girl who dreams of horses...

In fact, she eats, sleeps, dreams, breathes horses...

She reads about horses...

She draws horses...

She stares at horses...

She wears clothing adorned with horses...

She plays with toy horses...

Her absolute greatest dream is to have "a real, alive horse all her own at her house for her to ride."

Well, today is her eighth birthday,

and that dream has come true!

Oh happy birthday, Lillie!
